Before Audrey Hepburn began enchanting us on the big screen she started out as a young girl from a broken home. Her father left when she
was just 6 years old leaving a lasting traumatic effect on young Audrey. Picking up the pieces and enduring the second world war her mother
moved Audrey and her two half-brothers to their grandfather's home in the Netherlands as a means to avoid German attacks. At the age of
10 in 1939 Audrey started ballet. In 1940 the German's invaded the Netherlands and Hepburn adopted the pseudonym Edda van Heemstra,
though it was never her legal name it was used to ware off the German's. In 1948 Audrey moved to London where she continued to dance
under the instruction of reknowned dancer and teacher Maire Rambert. To help pay for expenses while training under Marie Rambert, Audrey
began to model for fashion photographers part-time. This eventually lead to Audrey appearing in theatrical productions and some minor roles
in British films such as Young Wives' Tale and Laughter in Paradise. Hepburn was chosen for the lead in the Broadway production of Gigi in
1951 at the FultonTheater that ran for 219 performances. It was in 1952 when Audrey appeared in British film director Thorold Dickinson's film
Secret People. This was her most significant role in leading her to stardom as she portrayed a prodigious ballerina in the film and of course
Audrey performed all of her own dancing scenes. With the success of Secret People Audrey landed her first starring role and her first American
film Roman Holiday which co-starred the already famous and Academy Award winner, leading man Gregory Peck.

Audrey Hepburn was born in Belgium on May 4, 1929 and was the only child of English father, Joseph Victor
Anthony Ruston and mother Ella van Heemstra, a Dutch aristocratic. She obtained the last name Hepburn
from her maternal grandmother, Kathleen Hepburn. Audrey studied ballet as a young girl for many years at
the Arnhem Conservatory in the Netherlands and moved to London in 1948. Audrey continued to dance and
became a part-time model. It was here that she began to act. Her first motion picture was called One Wild
Oat, a British film. Audrey Hepburn's first starring role in an American film came opposite of Gregory
Peck in Roman Holiday where she rocketed to stardom. Audrey went on to win an Academy Award and a
Golden Globe for Best Actress in Roman Holiday. Hepburn moved on to the films Sabrian and Funny Face.
In 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany's was released with arguably her most recognizable characters Holly Golightly.
During this time of success Audrey found time for love and in her lifetime she married twice and had 2 boys,
one child from each marriage. During the last 9 years of her life she was involved with Robert Wolders but
they never married. Audrey's love for children translated into her dedication with the organization UNICEF
starting in 1950 lasting until the time of her death. Audrey went on many trips to third world countries in an
effort to aliviate the children's hardships. In October 1992 Hepburn was diagnosed with an advanced case colon cancer. Despite several
surgeries to offset the condition, the disease was far too severe and Audrey Hepburn died on January 20, 1993 in Switzerland. Audrey's
enduring spirit lives on today and she is remembered as an icon of American film, a philanthropist, a loving mother, friend and companion.
